Quaecumque vera

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

The motto of the University of Alberta, where I hung out in the early 1980s, is Quaecumque vera. Taken from Philippians 4:8, it means “Whatsoever things are true” (in the wording of the King James version).

I suspect that most of the students during the university’s history, whether Christian or not, wouldn’t have had a problem with that motto.  After all, one attended the university in pursuit of objective truth.

However, I wonder what the students attending the U of A in 2007 think of the motto. I suspect that those in the sciences and engineering probably have less of a problem with it than those taking liberal arts degrees.
