Canadian superiority

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

I really don’t like the anti-Americanism that is so prevalent in Canadian media. I’m talking about the kind of smug false superiority displayed by so many CBC media personalities like Avi Lewis.

Robertson ScrewHowever there is one area where we Canadians are head and shoulders above the Americans. Of course I’m talking about the fact that about 85% of the screws sold in Canada are Robertson screws, whereas they represent only about 10% of the screws sold in the United States. Anyone who has ever used a Phillips screwdriver, or worse yet the Slot screwdriver, knows about frustration. The Robertson, on the other hand, can be driven with confidence knowing that it won’t slip or strip.

I realize that there are reasons for the Robertson screwdriver’s lack of acceptance in the USA, including conditions stipulated by Mr. Robertson in licensing the manufacture of his invention, but it just strikes me as odd that an advanced society would allow itself to be held back by primitive tools.
